What is Poet Laureate and where did it come from?
The ‘Dagenham Park Poet Laureate’ came about through a sixth form student. Anuoluwapo Kehinde was a recent winner of a Poetry competition (one of five winners in the whole country) entered as a result of attendance at the ‘Poetry Alive’ conference.
Anu’s prize was to attend a workshop where she worked with the famous poet Imtiaz Dharker for the day. During the day she spoke to the other winning students and was interested to learn that one school in particular had a monthly ‘Poet Laureate’ and as a result of this, the students were excellent at writing poems.
She came back to school and informed Mrs Brookes, the Whole School Literacy Coordinator, about this initiative and asked to launch it in Dagenham Park. She attended assemblies and informed all students to get involved!
This is how ‘Dagenham Park Poet Laureate’ was born. Each month a different student has their poem chosen and it is published on our internal digital displays and here on our website.
